Welcome to MBA Solicitors

Criminal Defence and Road Traffic Solicitors.

Can we help you?

The practice was set up in 2002, after the criminal department of an older established York firm separated to concentrate solely on this specialist area of practice.

The firm has enormous experience of defending all aspects of criminal and regulatory prosecutions, and also undertakes prosecutions for individuals and organisations.  Help is provided at the Police Station, Magistrates court, Crown Court, and Court of Appeal.

There are four partners and two solicitors, and a large support staff, performing exclusively criminal work.  We regularly deal with serious criminal matters in York, and North Yorkshire, and also nationally, as well as overseas military work.  All of our lawyers are able to represent you at the police station and magistrates court, and three of the partners are Higher Court Advocates, and can represent you in the Crown Court, and Court of Appeal.  You can also choose to use a barrister, and we regularly instruct only the best barristers, from Park Court, Zenith, and St Pauls Chambers in Leeds, as well as local experts from London, Liverpool, Manchester, and Newcastle.

We have been assessed as a Competence Plus firm by the Legal Services Commission, the Government body who audit and grade all providers of publicly funded criminal legal services.

Currently we are dealing with amongst other things, serious fraud, attempted murder, prosecutions by the Environment Agency, shotgun licence appeals, courts martial, breaches of road traffic regulations.

Each of our solicitors has different areas of expertise.  Click here for a closer look.

What will it cost?

Public funding is available if your court case is serious enough, and you qualify financially. Much of our work is publicly funded (also known as Legal Aid), and you would be surprised at the number of people who qualify for Legal Aid.  Try this link to see if you would financially qualify for legal aid, for magistrates court assistance: http://www.legalservices.gov.uk/public/can_i_get_legal_aid.asp

For cases going to the Crown Court, legal aid does not, currently, depend upon means testing.  If your case is serious enough you will get Legal Aid.  The Crown Court can later order you to pay toward your costs if you are convicted of an offence.

For private cases, such as shotgun licences, regulatory offences, and criminal and road traffic matters that are not covered by Legal Aid, we usually charge at the hourly rates set down by the Department of Constitutional Affairs.  We can also agree a fixed fee for advice and representation, and there are a number of payment options that we can help you set up to help with your finances.

Where are we?

We are based at 14 Clifford Street, in the centre of York, and also at 72 Gowthorpe, Selby.  We cover work throughout England & Wales, as well as courts martial overseas, and can travel to see you at your home, office, or place of work.
